700Credit Data Breach Affects 5.8 Million Vehicle Dealership Customers

A data breach at 700Credit exposed the personal information of at least 5.6 million people. The Michigan-based fintech and data services company provides credit reporting, identity verification, and fraud detection tools to approximately 18,000 auto, RV, and marine dealerships across the United States.

The company disclosed that the breach occurred in October 2025. It impacted data collected from dealerships between May and October of the same year. The stolen information includes names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers. In a notification on its website,

700Credit stated that a bad actor gained unauthorized access to personally identifiable information. The company noted that its investigation is ongoing and that there is currently no indication of identity theft or fraud resulting from the event.

Cybersecurity experts confirmed the incident was limited to the application layer. It did not affect the company's internal network or general operations. 700Credit has notified the FBI and the FTC. It also coordinated regulatory notifications on behalf of the dealerships it serves. The company plans to notify state attorneys general and is offering credit monitoring services to affected consumers.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a consumer alert regarding the breach, noting that over 160,000 Michigan residents are among the millions affected nationwide. She urged those who receive a letter from 700Credit to take immediate steps to protect their information. Nessel recommended using tools like credit freezes or monitoring services to prevent fraud.

700Credit recommends that customers remain vigilant against phishing emails and other scams. Suggested security measures include strengthening passwords and removing unnecessary data. The company also advises enabling multifactor authentication on all accounts and regularly reviewing credit reports through official channels like the Annual Credit Report website.
