Cyberattack on Swedish IT Firm Disrupts 200 Municipalities

A cyberattack on Miljödata, a key IT provider for Sweden’s municipal systems, has disrupted services in over 200 regions. The attackers reportedly demanded 1.5 Bitcoins (around $168,000) to avoid leaking stolen data.

Miljödata supplies HR and work environment software used by most Swedish municipalities for handling medical records, rehabilitation, and incident reporting. CEO Erik Hallén confirmed the breach on August 25 and said the company is working with external experts to investigate and restore systems.

Regions like Halland and Gotland warned residents that personal data may have been exposed. Other affected areas include Skellefteå, Kalmar, Karlstad, and Mönsterås.

Sweden’s civil defence minister said the incident is under review with support from CERT-SE, and police have launched an investigation. The full impact remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility.

Miljödata’s website and email systems are currently offline. The attack follows a similar ransomware incident in January 2024 targeting Tietoevry, which disrupted services across government and academic institutions.
