Marks & Spencer Battles Cyber Incident Disrupting Store Services

British retail giant Marks & Spencer (M&S) is working to restore full operations after a cybersecurity incident over the Easter holiday disrupted some in-store services.

While its website remained unaffected, the company reported delays in store operations, including issues with click-and-collect, gift card payments, and some contactless transactions.

In a statement to the London Stock Exchange, M&S said it took immediate precautionary measures to safeguard customers and business systems. “We are sorry for any inconvenience and are working with cybersecurity experts to investigate the matter,” the company said, noting that relevant authorities have been informed.

Responding to customer queries on X, M&S confirmed that click-and-collect remains affected, urging customers not to visit stores until they receive confirmation emails. Technical difficulties also disrupted gift card usage and some payment methods.

M&S has not disclosed the nature of the cyberattack, though the scope of disruptions has raised speculation that ransomware could be involved. The company has not yet confirmed whether customer data was compromised.
