Waymo Cleared to Test Self-Driving Cars in New York City

Waymo has received its first permit from the New York Department of Transportation to begin testing autonomous vehicles in Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn through late September. This marks New York City’s first official rollout of self-driving car trials.

Although testing requires a safety driver under state law, the move signals a major step toward future robotaxi services. Mayor Eric Adams praised the initiative as part of the city’s push for tech-forward transportation.

Waymo’s expansion continues nationwide, with recent launches in Austin, San Francisco, and plans for Atlanta, Miami, D.C., and Philadelphia. The company surpassed 10 million autonomous rides in May.

As part of the permit, Waymo must report data to the DOT and coordinate with emergency services to ensure safe testing.
